This is a good app, and a model example of how a dragon should be written. Good job.

#11391 Alicorn OCs

Posted by Chapien on 11 August 2013 - 07:08 PM

Any OC, any concept, anything at all can be done well. It depends wholly on who is executing it. A lot of "new" fiction writers (if you can even call them fiction writers - most of them are merely pretentious fanfiction writers!) invented the concept of Mary Sue as if it's the most terrible thing ever. If you look at some of the greatest fiction of our era - Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, Wagner's Operas, and so forth - they are all rife with self-insertion, Mary Sues, and Deus ex Machinas (I'm looking at you, Lord of the Rings!). Yet, they are still excellent works of fiction that convey a great story and are beloved by most people to this very day.

So, to say alicorn OCs are bad because they are "Mary Sues" (which, as I explained, is a fake concept) is simply ignorant and holds no knowledge of real literature. Of course, Alicorn OCs are usually bad. This is simply because the majority of people (myself included) are terrible at characterization and writing fiction. Alicorn OCs - and even "Mary Sues" in general, CAN be done correctly and even add a significant portion to the story, but there are a few rules! There can only be a few of them (preferably one) per story (hence why Alicorn OCs are hard to execute - we already have FOUR princesses!), and there has to be a real purpose for them to exist - they can't just be Alicorns just because the author wants an alicorn.

I don't think I'd use the word disgusting. But it is because we are human. We are, fundamentally, emotional creatures. When someone hurts us - especially someone close to us, perhaps even a lover - it takes time to get over it. However, the process of overcoming the pain is a growing process, and you will wind up a better person because of it.
